Adding Your Rental to Uber or Lyft

How to register your Upcar rental car on your rideshare account.

Adding Your Upcar Rental to Your Rideshare Account

After renting a gig-eligible car on Upcar, you'll need to add it to your Uber or Lyft driver account before you can start accepting rides. Here's everything you need to know.

Before You Start

All gig-eligible cars on Upcar come with the required vehicle inspection documents already on file. These inspections (Uber, Lyft, or Upcar inspection) are a requirement for every car listed for gig rentals, so you can be confident the car meets rideshare platform standards.

Good to know: You'll need the vehicle inspection report to add the car to your rideshare account. Ask your host or contact Upcar support if you need a copy of the inspection document.

Adding a Car to Uber

1

Open the Uber Driver app

Tap the menu icon, then go to Account Vehicles.

2

Select "Add Vehicle"

Enter the vehicle details: year, make, model, color, and license plate number. This information is available on your Upcar trip details page.

3

Upload the vehicle inspection

Upload the vehicle inspection report. If an Uber-specific inspection is on file for the car, use that. Otherwise, you may need to complete a new Uber inspection at an approved location.

4

Upload insurance and registration

Uber requires proof of insurance and vehicle registration. Your proof of insurance is provided by Upcar and can be downloaded from your booking page. Vehicle registration can be found in the vehicle's glove compartment or requested from your host.

5

Wait for approval

Uber typically reviews and approves new vehicles within 24-48 hours. You'll receive a notification once the car is approved and ready to use.

Adding a Car to Lyft

1

Open the Lyft Driver app

Tap your profile icon, then go to Vehicle information.

2

Tap "Add a vehicle"

Enter the vehicle's year, make, model, color, and license plate number.

3

Upload the vehicle inspection

Upload the Lyft vehicle inspection form. If a Lyft-specific inspection is on file for the car, use that. Otherwise, you can get one done at a Lyft-approved mechanic.

4

Submit insurance and registration

Provide the vehicle's proof of insurance (available from Upcar on your booking page) and vehicle registration. Ask your host if you need help locating the registration.

5

Wait for approval

Lyft will review the vehicle and documents. Approval usually takes a few business days.

Documents You'll Need

Have these ready before starting the process on either platform:

  • Vehicle inspection report — Ask your host or contact Upcar support for a copy
  • Vehicle registration — Usually in the glove compartment or available from your host
  • Proof of insurance — Provided by Upcar, downloadable from your booking page
  • Vehicle details — Year, make, model, color, and license plate (found on your Upcar trip page)

When You Return the Car

Before returning your Upcar rental, make sure to remove the vehicle from your rideshare account:

  • Uber: Go to Account Vehicles, select the car, and remove it
  • Lyft: Go to Vehicle information, select the car, and remove it
Important: Always remove the vehicle from your rideshare account before returning it. Leaving the car on your account after the rental ends can cause issues for both you and the vehicle owner.

Tips for a Smooth Setup

  • Start the vehicle approval process as soon as you pick up the car, since platform review can take a day or two
  • Take clear, well-lit photos of all documents when uploading
  • Make sure the license plate number matches exactly what's on the registration
  • If you're renting for both Uber and Lyft, you'll need to add the vehicle to each platform separately
  • Check that the vehicle inspection hasn't expired — inspections are typically valid for one year
